Disappointed the Republican dominated legislature didn't have on the agenda to stop this most recent state gas tax increase. Asleep at the wheel. Our state's gas tax is the highest in the Southeast. If we travel either North or South out of state, do our best to have just enough fuel to get to VA or SC, depending. From what I've read travelers on I-95 are bypassing NC gas stations for the same reason.
Yes, Harold. And I recall reading within the last week that, even though we have a high gas tax, our highway construction lags. Why? Other states have a higher local contribution to highway construction funding. Our local taxes are high, but they apparently don't support highway construction as much as other states, at least according to the article I read.
Republicans took a lot of criticism for the modest cuts they made last year. The cuts, in fact, needed to be much deeper in order to remedy our tax situation to a greater extent.
Easley raided the State Highway Trust Fund to plug a hole in 2002 for general budgetary expenditures, as Perdue has done as well. Can't balance the budget, no sweat, we'll just take from the Highway Fund.
Ah, you're all just nattering naysayers, according to our local self-appointed "elites".
Why, before you know it, you'll start talking about not supporting our new Performing Arts Center that we(the Elite with privileges) so desperately need!
Is that up, down or sideways over the last couple years? Anybody know?

"Our state's gas tax is the highest in the Southeast."
I didn't realize this until we went to the beach and gas was 20ยข per gallon cheaper. Wow.

Add in the spending ways of Guilford County and Greensboro, and the economic picture locally is not so bright, is it?
