Barack Obama has once again revealed that he was lying during the 2008 presidential campaign when he strenuously tried to create the appearance that he opposed gay marriage. His refusal to defend the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is the final piece of evidence. He lied to help himself get elected president.
It appears that the US House of Representatives legally can step in and provide legal counsel to defend DOMA since Obama is refusing to do so. Some of the national social conservative groups are urging citizens to contact their members of Congress. Let's hope this is not a done deal, in part premeditated by Obama.
Addendum: Sam points out Obama's blatant contradictions. But remember, we are supposed to believe that his views are "evolving".
For a constitutional lawyer, he sure doesn't have much respect for the law...his Interior Secretary is in contempt of court over ignoring judicial decisions concerning drilling permits in the Gulf, a federal judge rules Obamacare unconstitutional and he pushes on as if nothing happened, and on and on.
Further, his Democrat commrades in state governments have decided that when THEY don't like election results, they'll simply flee the state to avoid doing their elected jobs...is that what the Democratic Party has come to? I thought Obama told us when he was elected that "I won...deal with that"....? Isn't that what he told republican leaders in Congress shortly after the election. Sooo....is that how Democrats are going to "participate" in governing from now on? I don't like the election results, so I'll flee the state and prevent the state from operating at all....?
Combine these issues with Obama's complete ineptness on the world stage, and I'm beginning to think it's possible that he is a far larger disaster than I ever thought he would be...and I had pretty low expectations...

A pertinent cartoon.

Great cartoon, Ken.
Another dimension of this issue, Everest, is that when Obama was supporting DOMA in court, he was doing it in a decidedly half-hearted fashion, almost seeming to sabotage the legal effort to support it.

I have in the past been impressed Obama's Justice Dept was defending the law's constitutionality (I am not sure in what ways they were being "half-hearted" in those arguments in court). Although I understand they will continue to apply the law as written, now they won't actively defend its constitutionality in court. The obvious effect of this is to undercut their own arguments in any of the specific cases where it is being applied. This seems a rather overly-complex way to thread the needle.
The Obama style is complexity and nuance, where the American electorate likes absolute and clear assuredness.

Actually Jim, I think you are confusing "complexity and nuance" with incoherence and attempts to fool the voting public.
