It is a rare day when we can report a positive development in North Carolina's state legislature. But there was some good news last night.
A bill passed its second reading in the House to enable a referendum for a state constitutional amendment. It would prohibit the use of eminent domain for economic development.
The US Supreme Court Kelo decision made this an issue around the country; and North Carolina is just getting around to amending its own constitution. Let's hope this bill continues to sail through both houses.
A good decision, but on another property rights front, The legislature will table the issue of forced annexation until after the election. Coincidence?

That's unfortunate, Theresa. I suppose with the manner in which the legislature has historically been stacked, we have to accept small victories graciously when they come. Until more seats are won by Republicans, issues will always be discussed on the Democrats' terms.

"Coincidence?"
Not a chance, Theresa.

Joe, I am in total agreement (on Kelo).

Jim, it was an inexplicably bad decision. But if our own state is able to correct the issue within our own boundaries, I suppose that is the best we can hope to achieve.
