A person who represents himself as a Greensboro police officer has left additional comments at another thread here regarding the Superjam event at the Greensboro Coliseum. While I cannot verify he or she is truly a police officer, because a pseudonym was used, the descriptions seem genuine.
This additional information comes as the News and Record reports the person killed early Saturday morning was driving through a large crowd. Now that it appears we have a dead body, perhaps the Coliseum management and the city manager will see fit to stop sponsoring this event, and any that are similar.
Here is what the police officer said:
No other group of Greensboro Coliseum Patrons cruise high point rd and go down town to the extent as this group. Do some research, it's there, I promise. What you all don't realize is that many of the artists are gang members themselves. We provide security at the back doors to make sure to keep rival gang rap artists seperated. When you have a concert and one artist is "a blood" which is what is the primary gang in greensboro, another is crip (not many left in greensboro) and another is 360 mafia their the patrons are made up of the same. Not all people who go to the concerts are gang members and some go home afterward. But Most are, and there is no way for me to make you understand that other than to tell you...
Keep in mind...that there are 30-50,000 of them. There was only one magistrate working at the jail that night...
If we had a 1000 officers working it still wouldn't be enough. We (are) outnumbered and OUTGUNNED!

Popo has a point about musicians who are gang members. Roch recently blogged about the rapper Waka Flocka Flame who has came to Greensboro twice and caused near riots in the clubs he performed in (Touch and N Club). From what I can tell from the videos, crips gang members were heckling him and throwing things onto the stage. I understand how quickly such a situation can turn violent.
City staff and the Melderec con Simkins crowd are very eager to see a high level of activity downtown and at the Coliseum. They want these areas revitalized, and they have pumped in oodles of cash to make it happen. They also doubtless want to maintain a facade of racial enlightenment. So when an event such as this shows obvious warning signs-- even to the extent of requiring half the city's police force-- it is permitted to continue.
Once again: now that it appears we have a dead body, perhaps the Coliseum management and the city manager will see fit to stop sponsoring this event, and any that are similar.
Update 06/29, News and Record:
Watts and his friends were in town for Friday night’s SuperJam concert at the Greensboro Coliseum.
After the concert, they visited several nightclubs throughout the city before trying to go to the Players Club.
“Obviously, there were people who saw what happened, and we are asking them to come forward,” Rogers said.
“We don’t know at this point how the victim and suspect are connected, if they are connected at all. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”
The shooter is believed to have fired while standing in the parking lot and is believed to have run toward the Players Club after the shooting.
A description of the shooter was incomplete, and police said they do not have a motive.
I think from now on I'll go by the pseudonym Duncan Hines so that my commentary on all things leavened will be unquestionably accepted as true.

Guys, I don't know if you are aware of it, but we have a website that all of you can check out, it's called P2C..Police to citizen...It can be very useful in some of the information you seek. It will show, I think, calls by date and time, arrests, etc...Joe I apoligize for using a psudonym as a title and although I would never say anything that would get myself in trouble, I don't want to get in trouble for simply commenting about the events. As the public is touchy about situations so is the police department. I love my job and what I do. I am simply attemting to provide you all with our perspective and facts as I know them. I will refrain from commenting on things I know nothing about.

You'll wanna check the 25th as well...that was the date of the concert and peoples arrival into the city...so I would say anywhere from 5pm to 6am the next morning

The numerous "open container" and alcohol related violations are extremely interesting...
...because the grocery stores are literally swamped with tailgaters and concert goers buying beer and ice before every country music concert.
And yet I couldn't find a single "open container" citation issued during the George Jones concert (11/14/09) or the Martina McBride concert (4/30/10). I did finally find a single "oc" citation issued during the Carrie Underwood concert (4/19/10).
Where are the DUI checkpoints and police presence during these concerts where open containers and drinking are rampant?

The coliseum show pros handle those concerts. There's really no need for us there except to direct traffic, no rival country gangs running around to fight each other. Same with rock groups. Although there are still intoxicated patrons who wanna fight but for the most part everyone behaves. Also, theres not a lot of country, rock, and christian groups bringing their guns out with them to the concert. Crime rates do not increase during these events and they don't leave the coliseum and close down entire streets. If the coliseum needs us they call other wise we have more important day to day issues to deal with. All of those open containers your're talking about from superjams didn't come from the coliseum parking lot they came from surrounding areas in the city. The only other concert that I personally have HAD to work was phish or fish or something. I dont how to spell the name or even know who they are. Honestly I don't even remember why we had to be there. Whatever the reason was we didn't have any trouble.

Was there a gun fight/shootout? Were trees torn down with bare hands and used for campfires? Were buildings demolished? Were stores broken into and looted? Did the water at Center City turn a different color? Were there a multitude of car break-ins? Did the gangs meet on HP road or Elm to have their big fight?
It appears to me that to many people of color out at one time, in this city, at all times of the night, in a large numbers is a bit to much for some to handle/stomach. God only knows what they'll do? Right?
Its unfortunate a young man had to lose his life. He was shot by one person, not 30-50000 different people. If anyone believes that drugs and alcohol are only associated with rap concert goers, I've got a dollar tree growing in the Atlantic Ocean that's for sale. Perhaps the charges some of the folks received that night will be turning points for some of them to examine themselves. Perhaps some of the people who saw the young man take his last breath had an awakening of their own that will lead to many positive things. This is a teachable moment for all of us.

That is a straw man. What people are discussing and concerned about is the level of violent and property crime associated with this particular concert and if it is extraordinary -- not whether rap and other kinds of concerts are associated with alcohol and drugs which, while they have legal boundaries are not, in themselves, violent crimes.

We get the point.
Vivi, the difference (to me anyway) is that there is a very real history of substantial and serious problems, issues, crimes, etc associated with Super Jam. IE it has EARNED the reputation. It is a fine line no doubt. But the events surrounding Super Jam appear to have crossed that line and then some.
I would agree that an equal police presence and purpose at differant types of events would indeed find some of the same activities and issues. The diff seems in numbers. Probably due to the numbers of non concert goers in on the party. Much like Don has indicated. But I think an equal percentage of ticket holders and non-ticket holders probably get into trouble.
All that being typed, random and varied check points after CVM concerts wouldnt hurt my feelings one bit.

Mick, you are correct. After a George Strait concert people are not hanging out downtown or on High Point Rd until 6:00 am. They go home.

This is my last response on this...I have tried to give you the truth about these event and no matter what I say, it goes from me talking about guns, gangs, and violence to responses about drunk driving and open container violations. Preradstudent, the coliseum does not want us there for most other events...we go anyway...they complain to city council that we hurt their business...city council complains to pd...then orders come down to handle it in other ways...They don't even like for us to take action inside when we need to, which we do anyway. They don't want ALE searching artists dressing rooms when probable cause exists. Coliseum personnell take extreme care to protect artists and patrons from us. There is a lot of politics involved you don't know about that we little people have little control over. Drunk driving is a serious offense but we can only do so much...we can only catch them one at a time and we cant make illegal stops or violate rights to do it. I'll also say that other concert goers don't make the activities so blatant and do it in front of us as if they're untouchable. Most of them already have criminal records and don't care about a ticket. As for your checkpoints, you say two minimum...well if that were the case the first two drunks that came through would end the checkpoint. There's more involved with checkpoints than you realize. There's more to police work than you realize but Im sure its easy to think up solutions at home when you know nothing about what we do. If some of you truely believe there no difference in coliseum events just drive through. It's that easy. Sit at Stameys across the road and watch events let out.
So with that being said, I pray for all of you that if you ever need us for an emergency we are not too tied up writing open container violations at a carrie underwood concert or conducting a checkpoint after George Jones since it would require half the department to do with that many people.
