I completed the online survey. However, I seriously doubt that any input from ordinary citizens will be considered. The special interest groups will control the process and make sure the city hires another black chief - maybe a female this time!

A female is certainly a consideration this year, Buzz. The city of Greensboro, after all, is prone to that type of bean-counting. I had heard a rumor that one female internally may have been considered a likely candidate; but I hope the city manager sticks to his guns and hires from outside the area-- indeed, best if from out of state.

One other point, Buzz. One of the realities of Greensboro's liberal media/political environment is that it would be much easier to have a tough black or tough female chief. A tough white chief would elicit a severe reaction among the race baiters and among much of the local media. But a tough black or tough female chief would be tolerated to a greater extent. That is one of the peculiar realities of life in a liberal town.

That, Joe, is right on the money.

Speaking of police chiefs, North Carolina gets recognition as Nanny of the Month for its bonehead:

Those American flags can be very dangerous weapons in the hands of dangerous Tea Partiers!

I agree that a tough black chief either male or female would work well for all parties only if that individual showed no favoritism for anyone. Other races would be perfectly fine with such a person. It appears that we haven't had that, so far. Otherwise, we wouldn't have the current lawsuits from black members of the department. A real leader would have put a stop to that before it actually happened.
I don't believe that a female chief of any race other than black would be treated much differently than a white male. These special interest groups are so racist that they may even play the card for one of their own. Whether they realize it or not, that's exactly what they're doing by supporting the allegations made by the latin kings & queens. The current chief is ultimately responsible for everything that happens within the department.
Seems like the N&R is trying to fan the flames by their reporting on the recent lk&q arrests. If these folks are so peaceful, why are they driving around with such weapons?

Buzz, I would argue that the furor and the race-baiting over the handling of the gangs and the Latin Kings would be much worse if we had a white male chief. A white female? I don't know, it might not stick with her, just as it is not really sticking with Bellamy.

I am not sure that it was favoritism that led to the suits by the black officers. But I agree, it is very necessary to eliminate favoritism, which can be poisonous.

But you are right that the "special interest groups" will agitate regardless of whether it is warranted.
