We are heading down the home stretch in the Greensboro mayoral campaign.
Bill Knight has distinguished himself as the best candidate by emphasizing the most important issues. He wants to clean up the Greensboro Police Department and enhance its crime-fighting capabilities. He wants to get control of municipal spending, and lead through fiscal conservatism. And he wants to restore the proper environment for job creation in the city of Greensboro.
He also talks about restoring accountability of our local government to the local citizenry.
The Rhino Times had a great cartoon this week that illustrated the dynamics in this year's race. It is not available on-line as far as I can tell. But it portrays a Humpty-Dumpty-like egg figure broken on the ground, oozing its yoke. This was labeled as the Greensboro Police Department.
Bill Knight was hovering over the figure with a variety of tools, exclaiming, "I've got a hacksaw, scalpel, hatchet, calculator, and a roll of duct tape. I'm going to fix you one way or the other!"
Yvonne Johnson meanwhile was stretching her arms out toward the figure, with a placid smile on her face, saying "All you need is a hug!"
That sums it up pretty well.
I've listened to a large number of citizens who say they are fed up with the way city government is being run, and they want a real change. Enough is enough they say: restore common sense and order to City Council meetings; pay attention to small business owners; improve policing; the list goes on.
Two years ago Yvonne Johnson proclaimed herself an agent of change after she won the election for mayor. Nothing has changed, leadership has disappeared and some of the same problems we faced two years ago still persist.
I intend on using the office of mayor to the best of my ability to restore full accountability, strong leadership, and ethical conduct. Under my leadership the new council will focus on delivering results on the promises made during the election campaign.

Thanks, Bill for providing these comments. There are a number of messes to fix, Bill, as you suggest. I hope you have the opportunity to do so.

I just read the endorsement of Yvonne Johnson by the News & Record and it reads like a fairy tale and no surprise there. I sure hope Bill makes himself very visible to the voting public and gets his message out since his opponent already has name recognition. I support Bill Knight and believe that he will be a valuable asset to the City of Greensboro in many ways.

Betty, I hope to have a response to the News and Record endorsement here later today. There was little doubt as to which candidate the local paper would endorse in this particular race.
