New City Council Election Blog
A new blog is discussing the city council elections. Welcome to the conversation, Citizen.
The discussion regarding my statement on the district 5 race is interesting. I stopped short of an endorsement of Ms. Carmichael over Dr. Wade. The questionnaire responses from these two candidates, I believe, require District 5 residents seeking an alternative to Sandy Carmany to choose between these two challengers, and weigh the pluses and minuses.
My understanding of the procedure for obtaining the Simkins machine endorsement is that candidates appear before its board, and get questioned. I have been told that this board has included folks like Skip Alston, Earl Jones, and Joe Williams-- and used to include the late Michael King.
I am not sure how often this endorsement is directed to candidates who are not actively seeking it. Perhaps some readers will have some insight on this point. Candidates generally have to compete for the support, and demonstrate they are "worthy".
I agree with Citizen that the November election will likely be between Dr. Wade and Councilwoman Carmany; and I expect I will likely be supporting Dr. Wade at that time. It will be interesting to see who gets the machine endorsement for the November election.

It's going to be a blockbuster this election! I've lived in this community for over twenty years, and this is, (to me, that is), the most exciting election. I've read all of your reviews with the candidates who responded to your questionaire. So, I decided to make my predictions, of who will be going to the general election.
(Drum roll, please)....
AT LARGE SEATS (6)
SANDRA ANDERSON-GROAT
JOEL LANDAU
MARIKAY ABZUAITER
ROBBIE PERKINS
MARY RAKESTRAW
KEVIN GREEN
DISTRICT ONE
T. DIANNE BELLAMY-SMALL
TONYA CLINKSCALE
(NOTE: Luther Falls needs to loosen the "strings." He has to be his own candidate, not the PAC's, of the pulpits.)
DISTRICT THREE
BERKLEY BLANKS
JOE WILSON
DISTRICT FIVE
SANDY CARMANY
TRUDY WADE
So, that's my predictions! What's yours?

I'm going to differ a little on District 3 and say Zach Matheny will make it through the primary.

who else in 3?

Thinker, I try not to make too many predictions. But I think in the at-large race, I think the three individuals with previous elective office service-- Anderson Groat, Rakestraw and Perkins-- probably have the inside track on the basis of name recognition. Beyond that, I would hesitate to predict. I really don't know which three among the remaining field will be strong enough at the polls to survive.
District 1 and 3? I have no idea. I agree with your assessment on District 5.

I sure do hope you are wrong. Sidney Gray - Candidate for Greensbor City Council At Large

Mr. Gray, I agree with you that it would not necessarily be the best outcome if what I suggested about the at-large race comes to fruition. In particular, I don't think Robbie Perkins should be returned to the City Council on the basis of his role in blocking the audit of Project Homestead. But I am still analyzing the entire field.
