Reports surfaced during the past week regarding the degree to which Judge Samuel Alito has an abiding interest in baseball.
It was reported that he coached his son's Little League team in the past. He also has attended a Philadelphia Phillies fantasy baseball camp during which he had a baseball card of himself made.
Judge Alito has recently been making courtesy calls to various United States Senators. One of these was Senator Jim Bunning, a Republican from Kentucky. Bunning used to be a star major league baseball pitcher.
When Alito visited Bunning, he playfully reminded the Senator of the manner in which his team-- the Phillies-- had collapsed during the 1964 pennant race. The judge was a 14 year old Phillies fan at that time.
Chief Justice John Roberts may expect Alito to be a mere umpire; but it appears this judge wants to be a player.
